Who thinks the sun protection factor could be added and solarium visits would be a great holiday preparation, has misunderstood everything about sun protection. But it doesn’t matter, because here and now we reveal the biggest myths about sun protection.
THE BIGGEST LIES ABOUT SUN PROTECTION
“I don’t get tanned with a high sun protection factor.”
Many people believe, that sunscreen with a high sun protection factor (SPF) prevents the tan and use products with too low factors instead. Even with a strong sunscreen, you will become tanned! Because the sun protection factor simply means how much longer you can stay in the sun, without getting a sunburn. It also promotes a healthier tan, that lasts longer.
“Sunscreen has no expiry date.”
That’s a lie! Always pay attention to the expiry date, because the consistency of the cream can be damaged by strong temperature differences. How long a cosmetic product lasts is always written on the packaging. In addition, it’s easy to check whether the emulsion (water and fat phase) separates or the sunscreen smells strange. Then definitely buy a new one!
“While staying in the shadow nothing can happen to me.”
This is misunderstood really often. There is also a risk to get a sunburn in the shade or under the parasol. Because there are still 60 to 80 percent of the radiation. Another point, that is often forgotten is the scattered radiation. The sunlight is reflected by sand and water, whereby the shady area isn’t completely harmless.
“Oh, that’s red today and brown tomorrow.”
Sunburn is always harmful, because the UVA rays primarily damage the elastic and collagen fibers which cause wrinkles. In addiction the UVB rays can damage the cell DNA. In the worst case, it may develop into skin cancer after many years and nobody really wants to take that risk for a little tan, right?
“Before the holidays I go to the solarium, so that my skin can build up their natural protection.”
This is the biggest lie of all time. The tubes in tanning salons emit almost exclusively UVA radiation, which tans the skin, but doesn’t build up any natural sunscreen. Even worse is the fact, that the radiation is responsible for wrinkles and the nasty leathery tanning complexion. So please stop the solarium visits immediately!
So enjoy the great weather and don’t forget the sunscreen!
